The government is taking legislative and regulatory measures to improve the situation by adopting the Environmental Code andintroducing a number of innovations like the transition to comprehensive environmental permits, the "polluter pays and eliminates" principle, implementation of automated pollutant emissions monitoring systems at enterprises, etc.However, according to published information, the Kazhydromet (nationalmeteorological agency) marked 44 cities of Kazakhstan as the areas of high air pollution. The content of hazardous substances significantly exceeds WHO standards and indicators of European Union countries.
